I WAS 7 YEARS OLD WHEN I ORGANIZED MY FIRST LABOR STRIKE. 😂I grabbed my favorite pink Sunday coat, packed a few Stony Island Food Mart bags with clothes and announced: “I’m going to Grandma’s house because I’m too young to do dishes!”

Grandma Lill was PROUD. 😂My parents? Not so much. But what looked like childhood rebellion was actually my first lesson in organizing.

My grandmother, Lillian Gault, was a tried-and-true Chicago precinct captain and campaign organizer in the 3rd Ward. She belonged to a generation of Black Chicagoans who organized their neighbors, built political power and helped families break color barriers across Chicago’s South Side.

She taught me something before I was old enough to understand it: If something needs to change, ordinary people have the power to organize and change it.

I carried that lesson with me—from organizing around voting rights and marriage equality, to the Black Excellence Project, the fight for a South Side adult trauma center, AmeriCorps and Public Allies, and eventually back home to Avalon Park.

Then, 10 years ago in 2016, something happened that would become especially important to the work I’m doing today. I began presenting community leaders and elected officials with a different vision for South Side economic development:

STOP defining our neighborhoods by what they lack and START organizing the assets we already have.

That idea became a community conversation at Chicago Community Trust’s On the Table event leading to a microgrant and the CommunINCUBATOR conceptual pop-up right here in Avalon Park.

And here’s the part that matters to me now: There was no aldermanic campaign.

No petitions.

No campaign literature.

No request for anybody’s vote.

There was just me— working.

For years, I thought I was building separate projects.

Now, looking backward—from that seven-year-old girl with her plastic bags, to my grandmother’s precinct work, to activism, entrepreneurship and years of organizing around the future of South Side communities—I see something very different.

I thought I was building projects. God was building a path.

This campaign didn’t create the mission. The mission created the campaign.

I wrote about the journey, the people who shaped it, the ideas we’ve been building for more than a decade—and why I believe all of it has been preparation for this moment.

This didn’t start in 2026.

Our Ward. Our Future. Our Turn.
